![]() ![]() The Funambules originally hosted only acrobats and mimes. Only the Théâtre Déjazet would remain following Baron Haussmann’s rebuilding of Paris, during which most of the theatres were demolished to make space for an enlarged Place de la République. The Funambules had opened in 1816 on the Boulevard du Temple, known locally as the Boulevard du Crime owing to the number of crime dramas which were shown nightly in the boulevard’s numerous theatres. Born in 1796, Deburau began appearing in Paris at the Théâtre des Funambules some time around 1819, having adopted the stage name Baptiste. Jean-Gaspard Deburau, a mime from Kolín in Bohemia which is now part of the Czech Republic, lies at the heart of modern conceptions of Pierrot. It was the 1800s before Pierrot grew in stature and began to reach out across the arts, emerging as an emblem and muse for writers and painters. The essence of the character – his unrequited love for Columbine, who prefers Harlequin – was sometimes lost, and he was frequently portrayed for purely comic purposes, foolish and bumbling. Through the eighteenth century the character began to appear on stage in European centres beyond Italy and France, though often in minor and fairly disparate roles. Pierrot therefore took on a second life in Italy, and returned to France anew when the Italian troupes were permitted to return to the country over the following decade. Pierrot was well established in the Italian comic theatre by the time of their expulsion from France, by Royal decree, in 1697. With Molière and Biancolelli working in such close proximity, the interplay and cross-pollination between the troupes soon led the commedia dell’arte to incorporate Pierrot into their repertoire. They included Domenicio Biancolelli, already famous for his performances as the chequered comic Harlequin.įrom Italy the commedia dell’arte flourished across seventeenth-century France, and in fact the character of Sganarelle already drew much from the Italian comedians. By 1662, Molière’s acting troupe was sharing the venue with a troupe of Italian commedia dell’arte performers. The Palais-Royal theatre had been established by Cardinal Richelieu, in the east wing of the Palais-Royal in 1637. Pierrot is the name of a peasant character who appears in the second act of the play, as the fiancé of Charlotte. Pierrot, the sad clown in white face and loose blouse, expressing slowly and subtly in the liminal space beyond words, emerged in the nineteenth century from his roots in stock comedies and pantomimes to become the embodiment of a certain strain of artistic sentiment: sensitive, melancholy, and intrinsically alone, playful and daring through the subversion of language while suggesting the fraught and facile nature of gender.Īs a stock character, Pierrot can be traced back to Molière and Don Juan or The Feast of the Stone, which was first performed in February 1660 at the Palais-Royal theatre in Paris, with Molière himself playing the role of Sganarelle.

A calliope may have anywhere from 25 to 67 whistles, but 32 is traditional for a steam calliope. Since the pitch of each note is largely affected by the temperature of the steam, accurate tuning is nearly impossible however, the off-pitch notes (particularly in the upper register) have become something of a trademark of the steam calliope. The whistles of a calliope are tuned to a chromatic scale, although this process is difficult and must be repeated often to maintain quality sound. Some calliopes can also be played via a MIDI interface. Some instruments have both a keyboard and a mechanism for automated operation, others only one or the other. Mechanical operation may be by a drum similar to a music box drum, or by a roll similar to that of a player piano. This was in part to resist the heat and moisture of the steam, but also for the golden shine of the highly polished keys.Ĭalliopes can be played by a player at a keyboard or mechanically. Steam instruments often had keyboards made from brass. Other circus calliopes were self-contained, mounted on a carved, painted and gilded wagon pulled by horses, but the presence of other steam boilers in the circus meant that fuel and expertise to run the boiler were readily available. The traction engine could also supply electric power for lighting, and tow the calliope in the circus parade, where it traditionally came last. Circus calliopes were sometimes installed in steam-driven carousels, or supplied with steam from a traction engine. Riverboats supplied steam from their propulsion boilers. In both cases, a steam supply was readily available for other purposes. In the age of steam, the steam calliope was particularly used on riverboats and in circuses. The air-driven calliope is sometimes called a calliaphone, the name given to it by Norman Baker, but the "Calliaphone" name is registered by the Miner Company for instruments produced under the Tangley name. The steam calliope is also known as a steam organ ( orgue à vapeur in Quebec) or steam piano ( piano à vapeur in Quebec). Problems playing this file? See media help.Ī calliope (see below for pronunciation) is an American and Canadian musical instrument that produces sound by sending a gas, originally steam or, more recently, compressed air, through large whistles-originally locomotive whistles.Ī calliope is typically very loud. Andy Pemberton, a music journalist writing for Mixmag, used it to describe " In/Flux", a single by American producer DJ Shadow and UK act RPM, with the latter signed to Mo' Wax Records. The term "trip-hop" first appeared in print in June 1994. Regarded in some ways as a 1990s update of fusion, trip hop may be said to "transcend" the hardcore rap styles and lyrics with atmospheric overtones to create a more mellow tempo. Contrasting with gangsta rap and its hard-hitting lyrics, trip hop offers a more aural atmospherics influenced by experimental folk and rock acts of the seventies, such as John Martyn, combined with instrumental hip hop, turntable scratching, and breakbeat rhythms. Trip hop differs from hip hop in theme and overall tone. ![]() Trip hop tracks often incorporate Rhodes pianos, saxophones, trumpets, flutes, and may employ unconventional instruments such as the theremin and Mellotron. Tricky opened his second album Nearly God with a version of " Tattoo", a proto-trip-hop song of Siouxsie and the Banshees initially recorded in 1983. This may be partly due to the fact that several acts were inspired by post-punk bands Tricky and Massive Attack both covered and sampled songs of Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure. Trip hop is also known for its melancholic sound. However, there are notable exceptions: Massive Attack and Groove Armada collaborated with male and female vocalists, Tricky often features vocally in his own productions along with Martina Topley-Bird, and Chris Corner provided vocals for later albums with Sneaker Pimps. The female-dominant vocals of trip hop may be partially attributable to the influence of genres such as jazz and early R&B, in which female vocalists were more common. Vocals in trip hop are often female and feature characteristics of various singing styles including R&B, jazz and rock. Characteristics Ĭommon musical aesthetics include a bass-heavy drumbeat, often providing the slowed down breakbeat samples similar to standard 1990s hip hop beats, giving the genre a more psychedelic and mainstream feel. Trip hop achieved commercial success in the 1990s, and has been described as "Europe's alternative choice in the second half of the '90s". The term was first coined in a 1994 Mixmag piece about American producer DJ Shadow. It was pioneered by acts like Massive Attack, Tricky, and Portishead. The style emerged as a more experimental variant of breakbeat from the Bristol sound scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, incorporating influences from jazz, soul, funk, dub, and rap music. It has been described as a psychedelic fusion of hip hop and electronica with slow tempos and an atmospheric sound, often incorporating elements of jazz, soul, funk, reggae, dub, R&B, and other forms of electronic music, as well as sampling from movie soundtracks and other eclectic sources. ![]() Trip hop (sometimes used synonymously with " downtempo") is a musical genre that originated in the early 1990s in the United Kingdom, especially Bristol. Similarly, positive correlations between the 2D:4D ratio and physical fitness ( 25), and sporting ability ( 26) have been demonstrated in women taking part in leisure sports. An association between the 2D:4D ratio and physical performance have been demonstrated in female athletes for alpine skiing ( 18), endurance running ( 22) fencing ( 23) and rowing ( 24). However, only a few previous studies have investigated the digit ratio in female athletes in comparison to controls ( 15, 19– 21). Previous studies have shown that male athletes have a lower 2D:4D ratio than non-athletes ( 15– 19). The digit ratio has also been suggested to be related to physical performance ( 13, 14). Furthermore, the 2D:4D ratio has been associated with Differences of Sex Development (DSD) ( 11, 12). The digit ratio, proposed as a sexually dimorphic trait ( 2, 8, 9), is believed to be set during the first trimester of fetal development ( 2, 10) and does not change substantially with age ( 9). However, this concept has recently been debated ( 4– 7). Prenatal testosterone and estrogen levels are suggested to influence the formation of the second to fourth digit ratio (2D:4D ratio), with high environmental levels of androgens during fetal life being associated with a low 2D:4D ratio ( 1– 3). It is suggested that the 2D:4D ratio could reflect androgen metabolism and may be of importance for sporting success in female athletes. Furthermore, the 2D:4D ratio was related to urinary levels of androgen metabolites and physical performance in the athletes but not to serum androgen levels. Furthermore, the 2D:4D ratio correlated negatively with strength tests and positively with 3,000-meter running in the athletes.Ĭonclusion: Female Olympic athletes had a lower 2D:4D ratio, possibly reflecting a higher prenatal androgen exposure, than sedentary controls. The 2D:4D ratio correlated negatively with urinary levels of testosterone glucuronide and 5α- and 5βAdiol-17G, whereas there were no correlations to serum androgen levels. Results: The 2D:4D ratio was significantly lower in the athletes compared with controls although serum testosterone levels were comparable between groups and within normal reference values. The athletes performed standardized physical performance tests and body composition was established by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum androgens and urinary androgen metabolites were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The 2D:4D ratio was calculated using direct digit measurements. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 104 Swedish female Olympic athletes participating in power, endurance and technical sports and 117 sedentary controls. We aimed to compare the 2D:4D ratio in female Olympic athletes with sedentary controls, and to investigate the 2D:4D ratio in relation to serum and urinary androgens and physical performance in the athletes. Little is known about the role of the 2D:4D ratio in relation to serum and urinary androgens for physical performance in female athletes. 4Department of Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Swedenīackground: The second to fourth digit ratio (2D:4D ratio) is suggested to be a negative correlate of prenatal testosterone. ![]()

In the 19th century and early 20th century, other ".proposals for the name of a then-hypothetical technology for sending pictures over distance were telephote (1880) and televista (1904)." The anglicised version of the term is first attested in 1907, when it was still ".a theoretical system to transmit moving images over telegraph or telephone wires". The first documented usage of the term dates back to 1900, when the Russian scientist Constantin Perskyi used it in a paper that he presented in French at the first International Congress of Electricity, which ran from 18 to 25 August 1900 during the International World Fair in Paris. The word television comes from Ancient Greek τῆλε (tele) 'far', and Latin visio 'sight'. A visual display device that lacks a tuner is correctly called a video monitor rather than a television. A standard television set consists of multiple internal electronic circuits, including a tuner for receiving and decoding broadcast signals. Until the early 2000s, these were transmitted as analog signals, but a transition to digital television was expected to be completed worldwide by the late 2010s. ![]() Alternatively television signals are distributed by coaxial cable or optical fiber, satellite systems and, since the 2000s via the Internet. Television signals were initially distributed only as terrestrial television using high-powered radio-frequency television transmitters to broadcast the signal to individual television receivers. ![]() Smart TVs with integrated Internet and Web 2.0 functions became the dominant form of television by the late 2010s. Also, major manufacturers have announced that they will increasingly produce smart TVs in the mid-2010s. In the near future, LEDs are expected to be gradually replaced by OLEDs. Major manufacturers announced the discontinuation of CRT, Digital Light Processing (DLP), plasma, and even fluorescent-backlit LCDs by the mid-2010s. Most television sets sold in the 2000s were flat-panel, mainly LEDs. The replacement of earlier cathode-ray tube (CRT) screen displays with compact, energy-efficient, flat-panel alternative technologies such as LCDs (both fluorescent-backlit and LED), OLED displays, and plasma displays was a hardware revolution that began with computer monitors in the late 1990s. In 2013, 79% of the world's households owned a television set. Since 2010, with the invention of smart television, Internet television has increased the availability of television programs and movies via the Internet through streaming video services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, iPlayer and Hulu. HDTV may be transmitted in different formats: 1080p, 1080i and 720p. Another development was the move from standard-definition television (SDTV) ( 576i, with 576 interlaced lines of resolution and 480i) to high-definition television (HDTV), which provides a resolution that is substantially higher. At the end of the first decade of the 2000s, digital television transmissions greatly increased in popularity. For many reasons, especially the convenience of remote retrieval, the storage of television and video programming now also occurs on the cloud (such as the video-on-demand service by Netflix). The availability of various types of archival storage media such as Betamax and VHS tapes, LaserDiscs, high-capacity hard disk drives, CDs, DVDs, flash drives, high-definition HD DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, and cloud digital video recorders has enabled viewers to watch pre-recorded material-such as movies-at home on their own time schedule. In the mid-1960s, color broadcasting was introduced in the U.S. ![]() During the 1950s, television was the primary medium for influencing public opinion. After World War II, an improved form of black-and-white television broadcasting became popular in the United Kingdom and the United States, and television sets became commonplace in homes, businesses, and institutions. Television became available in crude experimental forms in the late 1920s, but only after several years of further development was the new technology marketed to consumers. I wanna give this game another chance, despite being rather disappointed in the ending. I know that the per-rest thing isn't an issue here, but even when I was playing I noticed how often Aloth would run out of slots to do anything where Pallegina could keep on contributing long after. and how can I replicate my playstyle in PoE1: stacking DR, PEN, and overlapping sources of passive healing (Draining, Veteran's Recovery, Ancient Memory, etc.) to have a very consistent party throughout who can outlast most foes, consistently do their damage, and who rarely ever get burst down before I can react, if at all? I also tended to favor Paladin/Chanter/Cipher over Druid/Priest/Wizard because being able to go 100% every fight without having to rest > situationally higher highs for me. What are some things I can do to better grok this game? I thought I'd come into PoE2 with a good understanding of the game as I've played PoE1 a lot, but I feel like my PoE1 knowledge only caused me to be unable to evaluate things as I was like, "There's nothing like this in PoE1." In any case, things are looking quite good for Resto Druid in Dragonflight. However, Wrath and Moonfire feel weaker compared to some of the damage tools that other healers have in their toolkit. Resto also gained some instant burst damage with Starsurge and Thorns still being powerful. This generally involves playing in the back and limiting how much you interact with the enemy team.
